I did SYD-CBR in J class on QR a few years ago now. Only service was tea/coffee/cold drink. Imagine similar between ADL-MEL.

What I don’t understand is the long layover in MEL - around 3.5 hrs. Why couldn’t the flight just depart Adelaide a couple of hours later?

It would also be the case that QR would have greater resources on the ground in Melbourne (and it’s a larger and busier hub in general), so it makes sense for that to be the place where it is fueled, catered, probably a crew change, etc
In theory the aircraft might depart DOH a little later, come and go from ADL a little later, and arrive MEL a little later, but a million and one factors go into aircraft utilization - availability of slots, airport curfews, crew change times, and the schedule preferences of passengers. In my non-expert outsider observations, 3.5 hrs on the ground at a very long haul outstation would probably be considered more than reasonable by most airlines.

Wrong. It is not a triangle route. QR operates with stops in MEL in both directions.

QR988 /989 MEL-ADL-MEL do not carry any revenue pax, only crew. It is simply a tag flight in order for QR to justify X2 daily flights into MEL
They potentailly carry revenue pax originating or terminating in Adelaide, not only crew. Although as previously stated the lenght of transit in Melbourne in not that 'user friendly'.
