200 jobs in balance at crisis-hit Sun Fresh Bakers

A family-owned bakery business employing 200 staff has gone into administration.

Sun Fresh Bakers, based on Boodle Street, Ashton under Lyne, is continuing to trade as normal as joint administrators David Whitehouse and Phil Duffy, partners at the Manchester office of MCR, review options for the business.

Sun Fresh turns over £10m and produces more than 40 million oven bottom muffins for supermarkets and small shops each year.

It was founded by Stanley Taylor in Openshaw around 30 years ago and is now run by his sons Stephen and Mark.

Mr Duffy said: “The business is still trading to full capacity and we are working with the directors to try to resolve the position and protect the ongoing business.”

Sun Fresh moved to a bakery Gorton before relocating to Ashton under Lyne. It uses over 100 tonnes of flour a week and more than four tonnes of fruit, washed and sorted in Turkey, to produce its range of goods.
