Activist group plans protest at St. John Medical Center over two office closings

An activist group plans to assemble this Sunday, May 2, to protest the closing of two physician offices.

The Mobilize Ohio Movement, which advocates a single-payer health care system, plans to protest at St. John Medical Center in Westlake. The group claims two primary care physicians had their offices closed today, April 30, because St. John West Shore Hospital said the offices were not profitable, according to Drew Smith, Mobilize Ohio’s coordinator.

“The reason they were given was a lack of productivity and excessive overhead because they were not seeing a patient every 10 minutes,” he said.

St. John West Shore said those allegations were untrue, though hospital spokesman Patrick Garmone said he could not disclose the reason why contracts with those physicians were not renewed. He said both physicians will continue to have privileges at the hospital and their combined 2,500 patients have been given other options for primary care.
