Akron-Canton Airport receives $16.6 million for runway extension project
Randy Babbitt, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, brought tidings of great joy to officials of Akron-Canton Airport this morning.
The federal government is providing the airport with $16.6 million to complete the upgrade and extension of runway 5/23, a project that is among several investments outlined under a 10-year capital improvement plan kicked off in 2008 at Akron-Canton.
When finished, runway 5/23 will be 8,200 feet long with instrument landing systems at both ends of the runway. It will be able to handle nonstop flights from most of North America.
Total investment in the runway is put at $65 million. The expanded runway is expected to be commissioned for service in mid-November.
