Akron General Health System hires Mass. hospital veteran as its CEO
Akron General Health System has hired a Massachusetts hospital administrator as its new leader.
Vincent McCorkle will become the new president and CEO of Akron General on July 1. He replaces Alan Bleyer, who retired from the hospital last year. Mr. McCorkle has been the CEO of Sisters of Providence Health System in Springfield, Mass., since 1997.
“In Springfield, Vince led a financial turnaround, created innovative joint ventures with physicians, developed innovative approaches to philanthropy and implemented a comprehensive strategic planning process,” said Richard Fedorovich, Akron General’s board chairman.
Mr. McCorkle will inherit a health system that has waded through some difficult times in recent years. In 2008, Akron General lost $10 million. Last year, it laid off 169 employees, didn’t fill 218 open positions, reduced salaries, renegotiated vendor contracts and froze salaries for nurses.
Hospital consultant Michael Rindler was hired to help turn the struggling health system around and to act as its interim president and CEO until a permanent replacement could be found.
