Another extension of FAA bill is likely

WASHINGTON — House and Senate staffers are meeting to go over each body’s version of new Federal Aviation Administration authorization bills to find areas that need to be reconciled.

But they will probably need to draft an extension of the existing law before the current extension expires next Friday, according to Jim Berard, a spokesman for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

One of the main sticking points for a new bill is a provision Memphis-based FedEx has made its top legislative priority: a section of the House bill that would make it easier for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to organize employees of FedEx Express.

The provision is not in the Senate bill. Tennessee Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, both Republicans, have said they will do all they can to make sure the House language is not in the final conference report.

Berard said the staffers are working on an extension, to be voted on next week, authorizing the current bill through July 3.

Both the House and Senate have passed 3- and 2-year bills, respectively, containing major improvements in navigation technology and providing funding for major construction projects but they can’t be signed into law until identical language can be worked out and passed.
