Chamber: recession ‘could be spur for success’

Businesses are “under siege” but the recession can be a spur to trigger firms’ revival through innovation, says the president of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Dr Moneeb Awan said a “dark, miserable cloud” filled with uncertainty and worries over the bank lending squeeze, rising unemployment, increased carbon emissions and government debt was hanging over the business community.

He told the Chamber’s annual dinner at Manchester Central last night that the recession had totally changed the economic landscape but could turn out to be the stimulus that triggers business development and success. Firms which have focused purely on cost-cutting during the downturn will be left playing catch-up when conditions improve, said Dr Awan, who runs Salford IT services consultancy eSAY Mobile.

He said that while some businesses will undoubtedly continue to suffer, those which display less inward focus, harness the best ideas and encourage their staff to develop partnerships through networks and networking would be best placed to thrive.

Other speakers included Transport Secretary Lord Adonis. Comedian Michael McIntyre performed an after-dinner show.
