Cleveland Cavaliers re-sign Zydrunas Ilgauskas

The worst-kept secret in the NBA is official: Zydrunas Ilgauskas is a Cavalier again.

Ilgausksas, traded Feb. 17 to the Washington Wizards as part of the Cavs’ three-team trade for Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair, on Tuesday signed for the rest of this season.

Ilgauskas, exploiting a loophole in the NBA collective bargaining agreement, had the rest of his contract bought out by the Wizards shortly after the trade. Ilgauskas, after 30 days away from the Cavs, was free to re-sign with the team, though he could have signed with any other team immediately after his buyout from Washington.

Ilgauskas, the 20th pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, is the team’s all-time leader in games played, rebounds, blocks and minutes played. He’s second in scoring, behind LeBron James.

Ilgauskas will help the Cavaliers’ frontcourt as they wait for Shaquille O’Neal to return from a broken thumb.

“The entire Cleveland Cavaliers organization, from our hard-working part-time game day people to our front office, to the coaching staff, players, ownership and everyone else, are thrilled that Zydrunas is coming back home to help us with our upcoming playoffs mission and hopefully, beyond,” owner Dan Gilbert said in a statement.

Added general manager and former teammate Danny Ferry: “Having the opportunity to bring Zydrunas back to the Cavaliers is very special for the franchise and our fans. We’re happy and we feel fortunate that Z wants to be here.”
