Cleveland State University names Global Spectrum to manage Wolstein Center
To revive the Wolstein Center, Cleveland State University is turning to a university arena management veteran.
The arena, which plays host to CSU men’s and women’s basketball games and concerts, among other events, next year will be managed by Global Spectrum, an arm of Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment conglomerate Comcast-Spectacor. Global Spectrum, which calls itself the fastest-growing company in the public assembly management field, runs 85 such venues nationwide, including 11 university sites.
In a news release, the firm said it will “oversee all of the day-to-day management of the facility, including booking, scheduling, marketing, maintenance, contracted services, staffing, customer services and other operations.” Those duties previously were performed by SMG, an arena management company that controls more than 1.5 million seats in 76 arenas nationwide.
“The Wolstein Center is a terrific asset for Cleveland State and we want to maximize its potential,” said John T. Boyle, vice president for business affairs and finance at CSU, in a statement. “Therefore, we felt it was important at this time for us create a relationship with Global Spectrum and Ovations Food Services to bring their high level of customer service and creative planning and execution to Cleveland State to help us realize our true vision for the Wolstein Center.”
Said Global Spectrum chief operating officer John Page: “This is an exciting opportunity for Global Spectrum because it will allow us to bring our resources, our expertise and our successes at similar university venues we manage to maximize current and new opportunities at the Wolstein Center for the students, staff and residents of the surrounding region.”
Two other Comcast-Spectator entities will join the fold: Ovations Food Services will handle food and beverage services at the arena, and New Era Tickets will become the official ticket provider for all Wolstein Center events.
Ovations Food Services plans to feature proprietary brands such as Hot Dog Nation, Scoops, City BBQ, Overture Caf and Boomer’s Bistro, said president Ken Young. Ovations also plans to work with local merchants to explore opportunities to deliver more local flavor through its menu lineup.
