Coffee Break: 50 Memphians to join Black Business Directory’s African-American Hall of Fame
Fifty Memphians will be honored today in the inaugural induction ceremony for the Black Business Directory’s African-American Hall of Fame.
They’re being recognized for their contributions in business, education, government, civil rights, philanthropy, entertainment and other fields.
The ceremony will be 3 to 5 p.m. in Bruce Hall at LeMoyne-Owen College.
Directory publisher Melvin Jones created the hall of fame after seeing similar awards given in other cities.
The hall of fame “will allow us to record and disseminate the wonderful things our inductees have done so that future generations can be inspired to meet and exceed the good deeds of their ancestors,” Jones said in prepared remarks.
Honorees include Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, the late Dr. Benjamin Hooks, Maxine Smith, U.S. Dist. Judge Bernice Donald, singer Ruby Wilson, former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton, Commercial Appeal editorial page editor Otis Sanford and former Memphis State basketball player and coach Larry Finch.
