Coffee Break: Learn elements of good urban design in just 8 weeks
Limited space is still available for the next course of Urban Design 101 led by the Memphis Regional Design Center.
The idea behind the eight-week course is to build knowledge about good urban design among the city’s neighborhood, civic and corporate leaders.
How cities’ public spaces are physically designed affects their economic vitality, environmental sustainability and social stability.
Classes will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings, April 1-May 20.
Most sessions will be at the Center City Commission, 114 N. Main. Enrollment cost is $200. Some scholarships are available for those with limited incomes.
For more information, go to mrdcinfo.org or call Charles ‘Chooch’ Pickard at 491-3354.

Led by Michael Synk, the program will focus on getting the right sales people and saying the right things to the right customers in the most efficient and effective manner. It is designed for business owners and sales management only.
Cost is $39 for In-Synk members, $49 for guests. Seating is limited and registration is required.

PR for nonprofits
Got a cool nonprofit but wonder how to tell the world about it?
Marvin Stockwell, public relations director for the Church Health Center, will share his secrets on the matter during his “Public Relations for Nonprofits and Other Groups” class at Hutchison School. The class is from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the school at 1740 Ridgeway.
Class participants will learn to create news briefs and public service announcements, pitch story ideas, book guests on TV and radio, and use social media to publicize events.
The cost is $49. For information or to register, call (901) 507-2460.
First lady won’t attend Le Bonheur grand opening
Michelle Obama will not attend the June grand opening of the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.
The hospital received word last week that the first lady will not be on hand to help cut the ribbon on Le Bonheur’s $340 million hospital tower close to Poplar and Washington.
Last year the hospital launched a letter-writing and Facebook campaign called “Help Bring the First Lady to Le Bonheur” to invite Obama to speak at the June 15 opening celebration.
“Mrs. Obama’s passion is children’s health care issues, and we commend her for her efforts to advocate for obesity and other issues surrounding children,” said a Le Bonheur statement. “She and her staff were gracious and cooperative throughout our campaign, and we thank them for responding to our efforts.”
