Coffee Break: Lumbermen line up Palin as keynoter

The Memphis-based association representing the hardwood industry said Monday that it has asked Sarah Palin to give the keynote address at the National Hardwood Lumber Association convention in October.

Palin, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee, will open the 113th Annual Convention & Exhibition Showcase in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Governor Palin supports a free-enterprise system with limited government involvement and understands that industries such as ours are a great example of America’s pioneering spirit,” said Mark Barford, executive director of the association, which has offices in Goodlett Farms.

Scripps narrows loss

E.W. Scripps sharply narrowed its first-quarter loss as advertising trends improved in both its television and newspaper segments.

The Cincinnati-based company lost $880,000, or 2 cents per share, in the quarter, compared with a net loss of $220.7 million, or $4.12 per share, in the same period last year.

Scripps is the parent company of The Commercial Appeal.

“We’re seeing steady improvement in the flow of advertising to television stations, with an expected boost from spending around political races later in the year,” Rich Boehne, Scripps president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “TV advertising is much stronger than last year, and that strength is continuing.”

Advertising revenue in the newspaper division continued to fall, but the declines are easing, the company said.

Consolidated revenues were $199 million, a 3.1 percent decrease from $205 million in the first quarter of 2009. Expenses, excluding restructuring costs, were reduced 13 percent to $182 million from $209 million in the year-ago period.
