Coffee Break: Struggling taxpayers can get IRS help today
the Internal revenue Service says more Tennesseans are filing their tax returns electronically from their own computers this year.
More than 520,000 returns from the state have been filed this way so far, up 7.7 percent over last year.
For taxpayers who are having trouble completing their returns, the IRS will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 22 N. Front.
The agency said taxpayers will be able to address economic hardships, make payment arrangements or get help claiming special tax breaks.
Taxpayers can also go to irs.gov or call 1-800-829-1040 for information about payment options.
Added security for HR
Memphis-based Verified Person, a national employment screening company, has launched E-App and Privacy Cell, designed to help human resources departments limit staff members’ access to sensitive candidate information, such as Social Security numbers and dates of birth.
Instead of allowing personal information to be viewed by numerous HR employees, the new programs access personal information needed for employment screening directly from the candidate.
“We work with a lot of large corporations with multiple recruiters nationwide,” said Jim Davis, Verified Person CEO. “We are hearing more and more from our customers that handling sensitive consumer information is a concern within their organizations. We have answered some of their security concerns with the launch of these two services.”

Fatty acids will cost more
PMC Biogenix has announced price increases April 1 for fatty acids and other products of its chemical plant at 1231 Pope in North Memphis.
Increases of 5 cents and 10 cents a pound are due to higher costs for raw materials and energy, the company said.
PMC supplies oleochemical-based products to manufacturers of plastics, consumer goods, electronics, paints, packaging, personal care, food, automotive and pharmaceuticals.
Furniture plant expands
Lane Furniture is adding 186 workers to its operations in northeast Mississippi.
Lane is using Mississippi’s job rebate program to help with the expansion at two of its Lee County facilities.
Lane also has plants in Belden, Saltillo and Verona. With the added jobs, the company will employ 2,051 workers.
The move comes less than two years after Lane closed production at its Pontotoc plant, shifting production to Belden, and cut some 500 workers overall as part of parent company Furniture Brands International’s layoffs that totaled 1,400.
Furniture Brands also owns Broyhill, Drexel Heritage, Henredon, Hickory Chair, Laneventure, Maitland-Smith, Pearson and Thomasville.
