Coffee Break: The Med will see $3.8M from Mississippi

A new annual Payment from Mississippi will yield $3.8 million this year for the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

Med officials announced Thursday that the hospital can now participate in Mississippi’s upper payment limit program, a government payment program that helps bridge the gap between Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement rates.

The federal government approved the plan in March. Thursday’s announcement came as the agreement was formalized between the hospital and Mississippi state officials, which included Mississippi executive and legislative leaders, the Mississippi Division of Medicaid and the Mississippi Hospital Association.

The payment to The Med will vary each year depending on how many Mississippi patients it sees.

To get the payments, the Med will transfer the funds from Mississippi to the federal government, where they will be matched. Such a move is illegal in most cases, but a federal exemption was made for The Med by Tennessee lawmakers.

The hospital sees about 3,000 Mississippians a year.

“This was truly a multistate effort by the elected leaders in Mississippi and Tennessee,” said Med CEO Reginald Coopwood. “This approval is evidence of the collective recognition of the vital role the Med plays in providing emergency and ongoing health care to Mississippians.”
