Corporate giving: Boys & Girls Clubs Investing in children

Service Assurance and Monogram Food Solutions worked together to donate $7,500 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis.
Service Assurance, a Memphis-based information technology support and outsourcing company for the region, has teamed up with Monogram Food Solutions, maker of King Cotton products, to donate $7,500 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis.
“This was our first engagement with Monogram so we thought what a great way to start a relationship by giving all the revenue back to the community,” said Mark Giannini, founder and CEO of Service Assurance. “Monogram’s values are very much in line with ours in that they love supporting the community, and they love children and nonprofits that help children.
“It was the absolute perfect way to start what we both hope is going to be a long-term business relationship.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis was founded in 1955 and serves more than 5,000 youths between the ages of six and 18 through academic and recreational programs. The local Boys & Girls Clubs operates six full-service clubs, a technical training center and Camp Phoenix.
“Service Assurance and Monogram Foods made an investment,” said Vincent Borello, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis. “They didn’t really make a donation because in the long run these are the kids that are going to be working in the facilities, these are the families that are going to be buying their products, the families that make up our city.”
The money will be used for general operations such as art supplies, trophies, sports equipment and field trips. Borello is talking with the two companies about future help, including the donation of food products from Monogram for the clubs’ summer camps.
The work-for-donation program was a first for Service Assurance, but is one the 20-year-old business will seek to do more of in the future.
“As the recession hit, certainly it’s hit a lot of donations given to the nonprofits and one of our core values at Service Assurance is giving back to the community,” Giannini said. “We made it a conscious effort to give more and to try to be creative in situations like this where we can get other people involved as well in giving back to the community.”
Monogram Food Solutions was founded in 2004 with the purchase of King Cotton from Sara Lee Corp. The King Cotton brand was founded in Memphis nearly 70 years ago and includes smoked sausages, corn dogs and hot dogs.
“Our brand is locally owned, and we want to give back to the community that has helped us become successful,” said Karl Schledwitz, chairman and CEO of Monogram Foods. “Many of our products lend themselves to children, so the Clubs are a perfect place for us to help with gifts like this.”
