DeSoto is option for Ingram Micro facility in Millington

With its lease expiring at its Millington facility in 2011, Ingram Micro is testing the waters in DeSoto County.

Millington officials said they are working with the information technology distributor and have presented a new payment-in-lieu-of-tax plan to the company with hopes of keeping it in Shelby County.

The Santa Ana, Calif.-based company’s lease on its 600,000-square-foot building on U.S. 51 and Micro Drive is set to expire in November 2011.

According to Millington leaders, Ingram Micro is simply weighing its options, but DeSoto County appears to be one of them.

“Basically, where we are is they are looking at their options,” said Chris Ford, Millington alderman and Industrial Board member. “They have been very open and receptive to what we have to say, and we are hopeful that we can retain them.”

Millington, which operates its own industrial development board, issued its first PILOT ever to Ingram Micro in 1995. Since then, the facility has become a staple in the Millington Business Center, employing about 400.

Ingram Micro would not comment on its intentions for the Millington operation, but in a 2006 interview, Ingram senior vice president of operations Terry Tysseland said the company was happy in Millington even though its PILOT had expired.

“We are totally pleased to be there,” he said, “and it would be my hope that we will expand that operation in the next few years.”
