JD Sports looks across the channel for expansion

JD Sports Fashion says it may look at setting up stores in France under its own brand following a successful acquisition across the Channel last year.

The Bury-based retailer bought footwear chain Chausport last May for £7.2m. But Chausport, based in northern France, only has 75 small stores, based outside major conurbations.

JD Sport chairman Peter Cowgill said: “Chausport provides us with a platform to expand in France, and we need to decide which brand works in what location. In Paris, for example, JD Sports would be very hot.”

But he added that the company had not yet identified a suitable site in the city. JD also said the getthelabel.com discount website it launched a year ago is not expected to make a profit this year or most likely next year either.

But chief executive Barry Bown said this was largely down to set-up costs. Mr Cowgill said JD had not been put off by other players such as ASOS already being established in the market.
