Memphis remains in top 10 in quest for Google Fiber
Sixth and steady.
That’s how Memphis ranks in a new survey of top markets vying for a Google Fiber Network.
The report, compiled by Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Steketee Greiner and Company, is the second in a series of studies of municipalities seeking to lure Google. Memphis remains in the number six spot, unchanged from last week.
Although the report is not an official indicator of Google’s intention and is not affiliated with the Internet giant, it does offer an interesting glimpse into how cities stack up in the effort.
Leading the pack is Duluth, Minn., where the city’s mayor recently jumped into Lake Superior to get Google’s attention. Rounding out the top five are Grand Rapids, Mich., Topeka, Kan., Fresno, Calif., and Sarasota, Fla.
Memphis leads the next five spots, followed by Asheville, N.C., Madison, Wis., Greensboro N.C., and Portland, Ore.
Baltimore, which had previously been in the top 10, dropped off the current list.
The rankings were compiled using a variety of factors, including digital presence, Facebook activity and online mentions.
Memphis has done well in its early bid, already sporting a Facebook page with thousands of fans, a YouTube channel, a Hook Memphis Up site and other online bids for the project.
Deadline is Friday for cities hoping to win the fiber network bid. No word yet on when Google will announce a winner.
