North/south divide narrows for IT professionals
The recession has narrowed the pay gap between IT professionals in the north and south, says a report by Manchester-based recruitment firm ReThink.
Its research found northern-based staff are now earning 69 per cent of London salaries, against 66 per cent in 2008.
ReThink says the wage divide could narrow further as government departments look to move out of the capital to the provinces to save money, with Manchester a prime target.
ReThink said the average weekly IT salary in the north last year was £625, up from £590 in 2008, against £910 in London, compared with £890 in the capital in the previous 12 months.
ReThink director Debbie Davenport said: “The north of England has been rapidly developing as a major IT hub over the last few years. It is now a serious challenger to traditional IT clusters such as the Thames Valley. High labour and property costs in the south east are pushing IT vendors to consider alternative locations, the north west chief among them.”
More than 100,000 people work in the IT sector across Manchester alone. Big players include Fujitsu, Siemens, IBM, Cisco and Oracle.
