Plough Foundation awards UT Health Sciences Center $4.5 million

A $4.5 million Plough Foundation grant will establish a center for drug development and education in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s new $65 million College of Pharmacy building.

The grant will establish the Plough Center for Sterile Drug Delivery Systems to be used to develop specialized drug products. The 5,800 square-foot facility will be built on the sixth floor of the building now under construction at the UT-Baptist Research Park in the Medical District.

The Plough Center will also be used to teach and train pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists serve as an educational hub for teaching and training pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and other employees for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.

The grant will cover all of the project’s costs including design, construction, equipment as well as data and telecommunications.

“For generations, the Plough Center for Sterile Drug Delivery Systems will have a significant measurable impact on education, research, health care for our citizens and service to the community,” said Scott McCormick, executive director of the Plough Foundation. “It will also serve as a catalyst for entrepreneurial endeavors in the local pharmaceutical industry.”

The Plough Foundation is a private organization that funds a diverse group of non-profit organizations working on social and economic issues in Shelby County.

“This funding will allow both of our organizations to compound the impact of our accomplishments for the benefit of our students, industry professionals and regulators and the greater Memphis community,” said Dick Gourley, dean of the UTHSC College of Pharmacy.

The new $65 million pharmacy building is scheduled to open this fall. It will consolidate UTHSC’s pharmacy faculty and staff who are now housed in six different building on campus.
