Rugby professional Matt’s cracking cricket idea

It’s just not cricket – it’s Crackit!

Matt King has a pedigree that most sports businesses would love to boast, but he has decided not to play on his rugby league background and has instead been inspired by a combination of cricket and tennis.

Matt, international star for Australia and currently at Warrington Wolves, came up with the idea for his Crackit bat while relaxing with his family.

It is a lightweight cross between a cricket bat and a tennis racquet, which Matt thinks is ideal for the beach or park.

The 29-year-old winger said: “I was having a game of backyard cricket with my sister and she was struggling a bit with the wooden bat, so she grabbed a tennis racket and started knocking the ball about.

“The idea is based around families and young kids who love being active and love the outdoors.

“The great thing about it is that anyone can pick it up and start playing and it doesn’t matter about strength or age.

“With the persuasion of my wife, Kirsten, who has a background in marketing, I have really started to develop the idea over the last six months.

“She has helped with doing a business plan and working out who the target market is.”

Matt has also worked with Manchester’s Fab Lab – a fully kitted out workshop which offers anyone the opportunity to turn their ideas and concepts into reality.

He said: “They helped me create a wooden prototype, which is now being turned into a carbon fibre model which will look and feel exactly like a tennis racquet.

“Life after rugby isn’t all that far away for me and it would be great to see it in the shops.

“In a perfect world, I would like to have control of the manufacturing, distribution and sales myself, but I am open to suggestions.

“I have been watching a lot of Dragons’ Den!”
