Brits in, Scots out with new school bus contract

You could say the British are coming to provide school bus transportation for Memphis City Schools with a new contract approved by the school board this week.

But then, you could also say the Scottish are leaving.

The parent companies of the school bus firms that won and lost the city schools’ business are both based in the United Kingdom. Privatization of government-owned bus and rail systems there beginning in 1988 led to the firms’ birth and growth.

The company that won the contract to bus public school students in Memphis next fall is Durham School Services, based in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove. Its parent is National Express Group, headquartered in Birmingham, England.

The firm now providing the service, and which lost the bid, is First Student, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Its parent is FirstGroup, headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland.

First Student is the giant among school bus companies this side of the big pond.

With its purchase in 2007 of Laidlaw, the leading North American firm, First Student captured more than half of the school bus market, according to a 2009 report on the industry by IBISWorld, a market research firm.

Coffee Break: New home of Planned Parenthood to get renovation

Planned Parenthood of Greater Memphis Region will have a new $2.8 million home at 2430 Poplar pending state approval in April.

The clinic purchased the three-story office building previously occupied by Family Services and it will be Planned Parenthood’s health center and administrative offices.

The clinic will completely renovate the first two floors of the 30,000-square-foot building before it moves in this summer from its prior location at 1407 Union.

Planned Parenthood is launching a $1 million building fund campaign, which it hopes to complete by June 30.

The new site will offer an array of services from contraception, well-woman exams, STD testing and treatment and pregnancy termination.

Auction for Elvis items

A bit of Elvis’ real estate history will go on sale in April.

The highest bidder with Phillip Weiss Auctions can walk away with the 1957 real estate contract for Graceland, which is signed by Elvis and his parents.

Also up for bids are the Graceland settlement sheet, a document from Elvis’ first Memphis home on Audubon Drive and the signed 1967 real estate document for the Circle G Ranch in Mississippi.
