DeSoto is option for Ingram Micro facility in Millington

With its lease expiring at its Millington facility in 2011, Ingram Micro is testing the waters in DeSoto County.

Millington officials said they are working with the information technology distributor and have presented a new payment-in-lieu-of-tax plan to the company with hopes of keeping it in Shelby County.

The Santa Ana, Calif.-based company’s lease on its 600,000-square-foot building on U.S. 51 and Micro Drive is set to expire in November 2011.

According to Millington leaders, Ingram Micro is simply weighing its options, but DeSoto County appears to be one of them.

“Basically, where we are is they are looking at their options,” said Chris Ford, Millington alderman and Industrial Board member. “They have been very open and receptive to what we have to say, and we are hopeful that we can retain them.”

Millington, which operates its own industrial development board, issued its first PILOT ever to Ingram Micro in 1995. Since then, the facility has become a staple in the Millington Business Center, employing about 400.

The area has gained 2,366 residents since 2000, reaching 22,578 last year, on the strength of $600 million in new apartments, condominiums and single-family homes from Mud Island to South Bluffs.

The report found “lots of singles Downtown. Lots of aging residents and retirees. We need to retain the young professionals and families Downtown,” said Lori Chapman, CCC’s urban planner.

“We need to attract more families,” said vice president of planning and development Andy Kitsinger. “That’s one of our Achilles’ heels.”

The 12 percent population gain came as Shelby County increased 0.6 percent and Memphis declined an estimated 7.3 percent.

When Mayor A C Wharton heard that hundreds of ServiceMaster employees had written letters to Forbes magazine to challenge its “miserable” ranking of Memphis, he pledged to deliver them to the post office himself. Friday, with CEO Patrick Spainhour watching, the mayor kept his promise.

Augmenting his duties as the city’s top official, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton on Friday promised to deliver some glad tidings about the town he calls home to those who would disparage the City of Good Abode.

Against a sunny, if somewhat chilly backdrop in East Memphis, Wharton attended an outdoor pep rally of more than 100 ServiceMaster employees who took issue with a recent ranking by Forbes magazine that named this city the third most miserable in the nation.

According to the piece by Forbes writer Kurt Badenhausen, Memphis earned its ranking “thanks to the second-worst rate of violent crime in the U.S.
